Updates

Chic Fitts sent me an interesting note about the Jay Printz case discussed in class on Thursday last.  I've added a link to the opinion in the Additional_Materials table for anyone else who may want to read it.  Also, I've finally solved the technical problem with the Bibliography page and am gradually brining it up to date.

Kansas, "Dust in the Wind"

Below is a link to YouTube's video of the musical group Kansas' performance of "Dust in the Wind" which I mentioned in today's class.  I believe this comes from a studio recording in about 1977.  The song was very popular.  The group is still active, though the personnel has changed.  They played with the UM Orchestra last fall, I believe, and a video of that performance is also posted on YouTube.  You may notice some contrast between the music and the bleakness of the lyrics.

Newton Selection

I have added a very short passage from Newton's great Principia (Philosophiae Principia Naturalis Mathematica) to the Additional_Materials page.  Locke was very strongly influenced by Newton's work.

Locke Readings

Detailed reading recommendations for Locke's Second Treatise will be posted tomorrow, they will include at least Chapters I through IV.

Descartes readings

Detailed assignments for next Thursday's class have been posted on the Syllabus page. You will see that there are three alternatives for the reading increasing in scope.  Please try to get through at least Discourse, Part 1.  --REW
